A few days before Christmas 2010, my sons decided to give each other haircuts. Their "punishment" was having what remained of their hair shaved off. Turns out they liked their new haircuts and it also worked with the PaperJamz guitars that Santa brought them!

I'm behind. I completely forgot to post last week's theme, so I will post both together this week (which I'm actually a day late in doing). But this week I have a bit of an excuse. I had sick little boys over the weekend. And by sick I mean there were fevers and a lot of throwing up. Yes, I know. maybe a little too much information. Sorry about that.

Project 52 My World. Her World. Week 1

In November 2009, I took part in a wonderful online workshop where I met a wonderful group of very talented and amazing women from around the world.

Recently, while I was contemplating whether or not to do a weekly photo challenge for the year, I was invited by one of the group to join in on something they'd been working on. It's called Project 52 My World. Her World., and I am so excited to be a part of it. Each week, we will post our own photos, as well as the entries from the other participants based on the predetermined theme for that week. I cannot wait for this year to unfold in photos!

This week's theme is "self-portrait" which seems like a fitting way to put a face to a name for everyone. So without further ado, here they are:

The dreaded self-portrait

I can't remember how I came across the Go {4} Pro website, but I did, and there was a big contest going on.

The challenge is "the self-portrait." The self-portrait tends to strike fear into the hearts of photographers. They (myself included) are so used to being on the OTHER SIDE of the camera that the thought of taking a self-portrait can be a little daunting. After all, we (as in humans) tend to be our own worst critics, right?

The current photo on my "about me" page is over a year old, and although I like it, it's time for a change.

A few sneak peeks

Well, not really sneak peaks because I've sent the online gallery links to the families, but I'm not sure what else to call them.

First up was little a little newborn girl and her big brother. He was a little apprehensive about holding his new baby sister, so dad had to help out.

And then last Saturday on a crisp but sunny morning I met up with this family at the Distillery District in downtown Toronto. I'd photographed their daughter when she was about 2 months old, and now she's 2 years old.

And last but not least, another family session from last Saturday. This time I met them at Bluffer's Park near the Scarborough Bluffs and we spent a nice hour walking around and enjoying the lack of people there! About a year ago I photographed little Mr. W as a newborn, and here he is as a one year old!

Then this morning my son came running into my office yelling "Mom, I'm ready" I'm guessing that my little super-hero was set for his next adventure, and I was set for an entry!

I often get emails from clients asking what colours their children should wear for their photo session. I have a little what-to-wear guide that I send out to everyone who books a session, however I thought I'd also put together a little display that shows the background colours that I currently have available.

As I didn't think my children or my cat would be able to sit still long enough to help me out with this, I had to enlist the help of my trusty assistant Domo. He is wonderfully reliable, which works well for situations such as this!

Littlest Heroes Project #4

A few weeks ago, I had the immense pleasure of meeting Marco. He was days away from his 4th birthday when I photographed him as part of the Littlest Heroes Project. This brave little guy has been through so much during his life so far, and is oh so sweet! And do you see that picture in the bottom right hand side, the one with all of the beads? Well, each bead represents a procedure that he's had done at the hospital (read about the Bravery Beads here).

When people bring in their children to me for photos, I often ask if mom and dad would like to be in a few shots. After all, once baby arrives, it's difficult to get everyone in front of the camera at the same time. It's usually either mom or dad that are snapping away. Often, when I suggest that both mom, dad AND baby be in the shot, I hear "Well, I don't know. I haven't lost all my pregnancy weight yet, so I'd rather not"

A couple of weeks ago, the beautiful Miss N came by the studio. After many attempts to schedule an appointment, we were finally able to get a date and time booked.

It was such a pleasure to photograph both her and her brother. They were both naturals in front of the camera. They even brought along their brand new puppy to the session!

New Gift Certificates

Just before Christmas, I started rethinking about re-doing my gift certificates. I liked them, but I didn't LOVE them. I attempted to redesign my own, but it just wasn't working out so I gave up. I wanted nice. I wanted different. I wanted someone else to design them for me. But who?

I can't remember what gave me the idea, but all of a sudden, it came to me...why not get someone who designs wedding invitaions? I did a few searches for some customized wedding invitations, and I then I found Jeromina at out-of-the-box ideas. After browsing around her site for a little while I knew this is who I wanted to design my gift certificates. I called her up and asked if she'd be willing to do a non-wedding invitation design.

After a few emails back and forth she came up with a design, mailed out a proof and I was smitten. It was perfect. I told her to go ahead and make a bunch and she did (and quickly too). Take a look at the finished result...

I always told myself that I'd never do weddings. They scared me. Just one of those things that you can't re-do! However, a few months ago, my cousin asked me if I'd shoot her wedding. I hummed and hawed about it. I told her I was nervous, which in turn made her fiance quite nervous, but I eventually said OK.

Last week I flew to Manitoba (destination wedding, anyone??) It was miserable, wet and cold. However, the day of the wedding was PERFECT. I had a lot of fun, and here are a few shots of the big day. I will be sharing more shortly.

Last month, I had the opportunity to help someone out for a project she was doing. She wanted to do a Photovoice for a local organization called Pathways. I thouroughly enjoyed the session, and had a lot of fun afterwards trying to get the photos to convey a daker mood.

The Littlest Heroes Project

I recently heard about an amazing organization called "The Littlest Heroes Project".

The Littlest Heroes Project is a non-profit based organization founded in January 2008, made up of professional photographers nationwide that provide free photo sessions to our nations Littlest Heroes. This is our way of giving back and taking a stand for these children who sometimes feel forgotten because of their illnesses. We are here to let them know that they are heroes to many, and to share their inspirational stories and photos with the world.

For a while now I've been thinking of how I could somehow help people with my photography. After visiting the website I applied, and was accepted to be a volunteer photographer for the Toronto/GTA region.

This is seems like such a wonderful organization, and I hope that you'll help me spread the word about it so that families who could benifit from it know about it.

Some of you may have noticed that this blog looks a little different. I decided to give it a fresh, new look, just in time for Spring.

Wow. The last 8 weeks have been crazy! In the best way possible, of course. Lots of new families (and many returning ones) have come to seem me, just in time for Christmas. I've had a great time meeting and photographing so many wonderful (and photogenic people).

I am now set up to take payments by Visa and Mastercard. Quite a few customers have mentioned that they'd like to be able pay that way, and now you can!

Along with this new way to pay, I've also changed my booking policy. Due to some recent cancellations and no-shows, I will now require the session-fee to be paid when booking your appointment. Although it is non-refundable, it is transferrable in the case of ilness or bad weather.

Payment can be made with a credit card over the phone, or you can pay via PayPal transfer. Of course, for those customers who are in the Scarborough area, you can also drop off your payment in person if you prefer.

Some new products are also available. Customers now have the option of ordering their birth announcements/holiday cards as printed press cards printed on high-quality card stock (like post cards). Many finishes are available, and the prices are listed on the main website in the "pricing" area.

Weekends are quickly booking up. There are a few weekend spots still avaible, so if you can't come in during the week, be sure to book soon. Plenty of weekday spots are still open, but those are filling up as well!

Yes, it's true, winter is coming. I know it's hard to believe, but it'll be here before you know it! So, it's time to start thinking about getting your holiday photos done.

Book early, as the 2008 Holiday Mini-Sessions end November 15th (to ensure that you receive your cards and prints before December 1st. )

For $150, here's what you get:

30-45 minute in-studio session for up to 5 people
10 images in an on-line gallery
50 holiday photo cards (5x7 or 4x6)
5 5x7 gift prints (up to 5 poses)
5 high-resolution digital images on CD

It seems that I have some catching up to do! So far August has been full of families, babies and maternity sessions (all of which I LOVE doing!) First up we have the "R" family that were from out of town. They were here in Toronto visiting some relatives, and we went down to a beautiful location in the east end that has some wonderful ruins, gardens and forest pathways.

Next up we have little baby "B" who was just 8 days old when he came by for his first photo shoot. His parents had been here previously for a maternity session. Little "B" was so sweet and although he didn't sleep much, I think this session went very well!
"L" and "C" came in for a maternity session too. They are such a gorgeous couple, and L's pregnancy seemed to make her glow.

And lastly (for now, anyway) are some shots from a fantastic outdoor maternity session from last week. Another fabulous family. It was a lot of fun, and I hope to do some more beach sessions in the future!

Look Who's on the Outside, Second Time's a Charm, and Boy!

"L" and "G" were in the studio about a month ago for a maternity session. Their beautiful little boy "J" was born at the end of June, and they brought him in for a newborn session. He is a gorgeous little boy, and I hope I have the opportunity to photograph him again in the future! If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Isn't how the saying goes? Because the second time was a charm with this little guy. His mom and dad brought him in last month, but little "J" was teething and just not in the mood to have his picture taken.

Last week we tried again. This little dude is a bit shy for the camera, but is so very sweet.

"M" knows she's having a boy, but has yet to make a final choice. We figured that "boy" would work, so I pulled out the blocks (that Marci helped me to get - thank you VERY much!!) and wrote "boy" withe the blocks. I think it turned out rather nicely!
Stay tuned for more. Last week was a busy week, and I still have to go through the photos from another maternity session.

Yes, it's been a while. I seem to have broken my promise of updated the blog more frequently. Once again, I shall attempt to be on top of things.

So far, summer has been great. New clients, returning clients, and fireworks.

A few months ago (yes, I should have blogged about this in May, when it happened, and not in July) I had the opportunity to photograph the "L" family. They requested a session in down in the Beaches, so off I went. It was a gorgeous day, and the family was wondeful. "C", the little girl was oh so cute, and their dog Watson joined them for a few shots.

Check out this beatiful baby girl. Little baby "S" was only 5 days old when she came over for her photoshoot. She was so small. It's hard to believe my two boys were that small (or nearly that small) once. Here is the proud new dad with his little girl. Can you tell she already has him wrapped around his little finger?

These 4 siblings wanted to get some photos of themselves as a gift for their parents' anniversary. The were such a hoot to photograph. I had a wonderful time, and I hope they did too.

Look at this sweet little girl! Her mom was one of the wonderful volunteers for my maternity shoots back in February, and on Saturday the entire family came in for a photoshoot.

This little cutie came over with his mother yesterday. He was a little shy at first, but really warmed up to the camera after a few shots. He loved his mom's belly and give it many hugs and kisses!

It's been almost a month since the "welcome" post was written. I'm hoping to now start updating this sooner.

You may (or may not) have noticed, but the logo and colours have changed. I'm quite happy with the new design and colour scheme, and the new business cards should be ready soon.

Be sure to check out the new maternity section on the website. Thanks to some wonderful (and beautiful) volunteers, I've been able to add some maternity shots to my poftfolio. And if you don't see you picture there yet, it's because I forgot to get you to sign a model release form!
